Diagram of shadow effects
Use Shadow analysis to assess the house's impact on neighbors
1. Project description
Location: Calgary Alberta Canada
Industry: Architecture diagram
Project duration: 1-7 days
The client was planning to extend their home and wanted to assess how the expansion would affect their neighbors’ houses.
2. Final Report
After completing all the simulations, here is the diagram along with basic comments on the negative impacts that the expanded development of the house will have during key times of the year:
Shadow diagram at time December 21st
This is winter at the research location. The sun’s angle is at its lowest because the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, causing the house’s shadow to affect the neighboring house on both sides.
Shadow diagram at time June 21st
This is summer in research location. The sun’s angle is highest when the Southern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun, and the house’s shadow does not affect the neighboring houses.
Shadow diagram at time September/March 21st
The sun’s angle is at its low because the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, causing the house’s shadow to affect the neighboring house on both sides
Conclusion:
When the house expands to the north, it will affect neighboring houses on both sides
